HERS Education and Training
| As part of the California Energy Commission’s efforts to integrate home energy ratings at the time homes are sold, a critical element is engaging the real estate community and other key stakeholders on the benefits of home energy ratings. A subcontractor to Architectural Energy Corporation, RSG developed an overall training and education strategy to reach real estate licensees, MLS system operators, coordinate with efficiency programs and pilot programs throughout the state, and develop educational materials for home buyers and sellers. RSG will help the CEC launch training and education efforts throughout 2009-2010, with the goal of raising awareness, increasing the number of HERS ratings and efficiency upgrades, and engaging the real estate community in a positive and ongoing dialogue about time of sale home energy ratings. |
Results:
- RSG conducted outreach to the real estate community and MLS operators throughout California to identify barriers to conducting time-of-sale home energy ratings. RSG used that feedback to develop a training curriculum and plan to collaborate with real estate licensees and MLS operators, in partnership with residential energy efficiency programs and state government. The curriculum and plan outline the benefits to real estate professionals, as well as home buyers and sellers of conducting home energy ratings, and provide specific guidance on how to obtain and use ratings. Training will be delivered through the state Department of Real Estate, as well as through individual real estate brokerages and Associations of Realtors.
